Immutable and Polygon Join Forces for Web3 Gaming

In a big announcement at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Immutable, the leading Web3 gaming platform, shared that it is partnering with the top Ethereum scaling company Polygon to create a “one-stop-shop” for the development of Web3 games. With the partnership, the two companies hope to onboard the next billion users into the next iteration of the internet.

Robbie Ferguson, the co-founder of Immutable, made the announcement during Immutable’s keynote event. He said, “I think for a very long time, gamers have been forced between what solution will bring the best user experience versus the best scalability, and ultimately the goal is to just make incredible games where players are empowered with true self-custody and decentralization and take this mainstream as quickly as possible.”

The companies will combine forces to create a new dedicated gaming blockchain that uses Polygon’s zero-knowledge (zk) rollup technology. Zk-rollups are tools that batch thousands of transactions and submit them as one to Ethereum’s L1 blockchain. This reduces transaction cost and processing time, while still retaining Ethereum’s robust security.

While there is no specific date for the launch of the blockchain, a Polygon blog post said it will be released in the coming months. However, game developers who want to get a jump on the competition can check out the documentation for the platform already. Polygon and Immutable have competed in recent years in a hotly contested L2 Ethereum scaling solution market, making this partnership even more of a surprise.

Polygon and Immutable Make News This Year

While Ethereum continues its reign as the leading tech-focused blockchain, its L2 scaling solutions have increasingly been pushed to the forefront. In part, this is due to the transaction costs on Ethereum, which has seen gas prices rise as more users take advantage of the blockchain’s security and decentralization. Two of those L2 scaling solutions, and two that we have covered frequently here at Rarity Sniper, are Immutable and Polygon.

Immutable, which pitches its focus as Web3 gaming, has made news in the NFT space this year. Some of the recent headlines involving Immutable include:

And then there is Polygon. The leading L2 scaling solution has made waves in 2022 and 2023 with its partnerships, specifically large corporations looking to launch into Web3. Those corporations include Coca-Cola, Meta, and Starbucks, among many others. Disney also invited the company to participate in its accelerator program. Here are some headlines about Polygon in 2022 and 2023:

Given their statures, the partnership between Immutable and Polygon is big news that will almost certainly affect Web3 gaming and adoption. Here at Rarity Sniper, we’ll pay close attention for further developments in the story.
