NFL & Reddit Release Super Bowl LVII Collectibles

Reddit just launched a new series of custom avatars for Super Bowl LVII in partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and Polygon blockchain.

To lead up to the game this Sunday between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, the “Super Bowl LVII x Reddit Collectible Avatar” collection is a set of avatar digital collectibles that will let fans support their favorite team in the Reddit app. The NFTs can also be traded on secondary marketplaces like OpenSea.

Four types of NFTs can be minted by Reddit users: a Chiefs, Eagles, The Champs, or LVII Super Fans digital collectible. Like the company’s previous digital collectible drops, the NFTs are free and give holders certain benefits on the platform. Reddit has a huge football fan community — facilitating 411 million views in football-related communities each month.

As of writing, there have already been 880,936 NFTs minted, and they hold a floor price of .25 MATIC on OpenSea, for a total of 4 ETH in trading volume. These are big numbers, especially considering only one NFT can be minted per account.

Of course, the success of Reddit and the NFL’s avatars should come as no surprise. The Super Bowl is the most-watched annual sporting event in the world, and the upcoming matchup between coach Andy Reid’s hard-scrabble Kansas City Chiefs and the fast and furious Philadelphia Eagles is expected to be a thriller.

Furthermore, Reddit has had huge success with its free digital collectibles in the past. It’s previous free avatar mints on the Polygon blockchain have helped onboard millions of users to Web3. We expect many more Super Bowl NFTs will be minted before game day.

Reddit Continues to Push Into Web3

The partnership between Reddit and the NFL for the Super Bowl NFTs is exciting for Reddit users and football fans. But it certainly isn’t Reddits first foray into Web3. We’ve reported several stories about Reddit creating digital collectibles and NFT marketplaces. Let’s review what the platform has been up to.

First, about seven months ago, Reddit launched an NFT-based avatar marketplace for users to buy NFT profile pictures (PFPs) at fixed rates. The launch featured 90 unique designs and users could purchase the Polygon-based NFTs with a credit or debit card.

Next, three months ago, Reddit announced that 3 million Redditors created crypto wallets using the company’s Vault blockchain wallet service. This meant that Reddit had more active NFT wallets than leading secondary NFT marketplace OpenSea.

Finally, following the announcement, Reddit’s NFT trading volume surged, amassing millions in trading volume across a myriad of Reddit collections. The highest selling Reddit NFT came from the Senses collection, where an individual NFT sold for 30 ETH, or around $40,000 at the time.

Reddit’s Web3 strategy to launch free Polygon-based NFTs for its giant community appears to be working, and its Super Bowl NFTs in partnership with the NFL look like they’re already off to a great start. We’ll keep our ears to ground for any new developments in the story.
