Donald Trump is back in Web3 news with the announcement of a new NFT collection called the ‘Mugshot Edition.’ The NFTs are priced at $99 and feature Trump’s infamous mugshot picture when he was arrested this August in Georgia.
According to Trump’s website, fans who purchase 47 Trump cards or more — a nod to the fact that if Trump is elected next year he will become the 47th U.S. president — will get the chance to have dinner with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate, and receive a piece of the suit he wore for the mugshot. There will also be hand signed and rare 1:1 NFTs available in the collection, and the NFTs double as physical cards that will be shipped to U.S. addresses.
The Mugshot Edition NFTs appear to be an add on to the original Trump Digital Collectible Cards, a Polygon-based collection consisting of 45,000 NFTs that sold out in December. The initial NFTs sold for the price of 0.2 ETH, but have struggled in the bear market, with their floor price plunging as low as 0.1 ETH.
The Trump Digital Collectible Cards show photos of Trump in front of iconic places like the Statue of Liberty, the White House and even the moon. The artwork, which has been wildly criticized for being unprofessional and photoshopped, depicts Trump with boxing gloves, playing golf while hundred-dollar bills float around him, and even pulling off his suit to reveal a Superman custom underneath.
Despite the questionable art, news of the Mugshot Edition drop appears to be stirring up price action with the ex-president’s existing NFTs. Their current floor price has risen to 0.159 ETH (at the time of writing), and over the past 24 hours, the collection has done over 400 sales, an increase of 746% — as per data from OpenSea.
Love him or hate him, it’s difficult to deny Trump has the keen ability to take a bad situation like getting arrested and turn it around in his favor. His website even celebrates his arrest as an historic moment, being the “first ever mugshot of a United States President.”
The Trump Family Appears to Be Bullish on Web3
During his time in office, Donald Trump was critical of cryptocurrency and even said he was “not a fan.” But it appears his stance on crypto and digital assets like non-fungible tokens has changed considerably since then.
