7-Eleven Enters Web3 with Free Slurpee NFTs

For most people, July 11th is just any other day. But not for 7-Eleven Inc., the global convenience store franchise that turned 96 yesterday. Since 2022, the company has offered a complimentary small Slurpee at its participating locations. But this year it added a digital twist: free NFT Slurpees.

The ‘Find Your Slurpee Vibe’ digital collectibles, 7-Eleven’s first foray into NFTs, were created on the Polygon blockchain. Users can visit 7-Eleven.com via mobile phone to mix classic Slurpee flavors like Blue Raspberry, Cherry, Pina Colada, and Summertime Citrus and then mint their creations as a digital collectible. Unlike the IRL counterpart, the NFT won’t add pounds to your waistline.

7-Eleven is asking users to share their digital creations using the #SlurpeeVibe — and there’s more on the line than just virtual Slurpee mixologist bragging rights. Select holders will also be eligible for prizes like Slurpee inspired jewelry from King Ice.

According to Marissa Jarrat, the 7-Eleven executive VP and Chief Marketing & Sustainability Officer, the company is always looking for new ways to “celebrate with customers on our favorite day of the year.” She added that its first digital collectible project could “even give us some inspiration for future flavors.”

According to terms and conditions, the 7-Eleven Find Your Slurpee Vibe digital collectibles cannot be sold or transferred to a third party, like other collectible NFTs. To claim the NFT Slurpee customers must enter their email, collector’s name, address, and phone number. The digital collectibles can be remixed over and over through July 18th.

Traditional Companies Onboarded to Web3 Via Polygon

When most people think of 7-Eleven, Web3 technology usually doesn’t come to mind. But through Polygon, a traditional company known for hot dogs, coffee, gas, snacks, and of course, Slurpees — is getting in on the Web action. And 7-Eleven isn’t the only one.

All year, Polygon has partnered with traditional companies to help onboard them and their customers into Web3. At Rarity Sniper, we’ve been here to write about it. Let’s take a look at some of the headlines about Polygon over the past year:

Polygon has several advantages as a layer 2 blockchain: fast speeds, super low minting costs, and the fact it’s one of the most environmentally friendly blockchains that exists. But it also must be doing something right to continue to attract such a high level of brands and companies into its ecosystem. 7-Eleven is yet another example.

We’ll have to be patient to see if 7-Eleven’s Find Your Slurpee Vibe digital collectibles are popular with customers. But the project has two things going for it: It’s free and it sounds fun. Plus it gives everyone who didn’t grab a free Slurpee yesterday (like me) a chance to enjoy a virtual one. At Rarity Sniper, we’ll be sure to follow up on any developments in the story.
