Solana NFT collections are finally having their day in the sun. DeGods, the top Solana PFP collection, recently made history, entering the Top 5 of NFT PFP collections across all blockchains. The floor price, initially reported as hitting 400 SOL, beat out blue-chip Ethereum collections Clone X, Doodles, and Azuki. It remains behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club, CryptoPunks, Moonbirds, and Mutant Ape Yacht Club.
For those unfamiliar with DeGods, the collection launched in October of 2021 at the tail end of the “Summer of SOL.” That period saw the rise of many top Solana NFT collections, which benefited from a blockchain with lightning-quick speeds and low fees, contrasting to the Ethereum blockchain at that time.
Since launching, it has had its fair share of ups and downs — like most NFT collections — but created the $DUST ecosystem, which has led to more money. It also restyled the art form, branding the DeGods as “DeadGods” to give the project a little more of an edge. Today, the project represents “degenerates, punks, and misfits,” according to the OpenSea official description.
The news of DeGods’ achievement quickly spread through Crypto Twitter, and the floor price responded accordingly, rising to around 420 SOL as of midday Wednesday. This led to some Twitter users speculating it would flip the Mutant Ape Yacht Club in floor price next, a feat that would place DeGods in the Top 4 of NFT PFP projects.
In more mainstream news, DeGods bought 25 “Fire NFTs” from the basketball team “Killer 3s” in Ice Cube’s 3×3 league a couple of months back. This gives the DeGods team power to vote on Killer 3s leadership team and create merchandise for the Killer 3s (with league approval). The purchase cost the DeGods team a reported $625,000.
Top NFT Collections Make Moves During the Bear Market
Although the bear market has hurt the NFT space significantly, with trading volume falling to 2021 lows, that hasn’t stopped some teams from innovating. Here are a few stories about the NFT community continuing to push forward amidst the 2022 difficulty.
Yuga Labs, the creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, has not slowed down one iota during the downturn. Recently, it launched its Otherside metaverse and conducted the “First Trip.” In it, users were able to test out the metaverse and even fight a giant Koda.
A spin-off from BAYC, Jenkins the Valet also continues to innovate. It completed its first crowd-sourced novel Bored and Dangerous, held the NFT sale of that book, and is primed to reveal its platform for reading the book.
Then there is the team behind Moonbirds. A couple of weeks ago, Kevin Rose made the announcement that Moonbirds would switch from commercial rights to Creative Commons licensing. Although the move was not without its share of critics, Rose said it aligns more with Web3.
DeGods entering the Top 5 of NFT PFP projects based on floor price is exciting news, in part because it breaths life into Solana projects that many have long derided. It may flip the Mutant Ape Yacht Club next, giving holders even more reason to celebrate.
