A GOAT has joined the Bored Ape Yacht Club. Earlier this week, reports indicated that Tom Brady purchased Bored Ape #3667 for 133 ETH or $460,000. After a tweet that asked Brady directly if he bought this particular Ape, the legendary quarterback responded, “I didn’t inhale.”
The remark, seen by many as confirmation of the buy, refers to the “Bored Unshaven Cigarette” mouth trait of #3667. Some have taken it as a “joint” rather than a cigarette.
If the news is accurate, Tom Brady would be one of the biggest stars to enter the Yacht Club. He joins Madonna, Neymar, and Gwyneth Paltrow as recent entrees and is just the second major celebrity to purchase a BAYC NFT since the drop of ApeCoin in March.
#3667 is ranked #4162 in rarity out of the 10,000 Apes in the collection. It has six traits, including the Bored Unshaven Cigarette, Angry eyes, and Dark Brown fur. Its rarest trait is its WW2 Pilot Helmet, which just 110 or 1.1% of Apes in the collection have.
Tom Brady Is an Outspoken Proponent of Crypto and NFTs
Tom Brady is no stranger to the cryptocurrency and NFT worlds. He advocates for crypto use, having an agreement with FTX to promote its platform. And he co-founded the NFT marketplace Autograph, which seeks to pair top athletes with their fans through collectible non-fungible tokens.
Autograph has been busy, raising hundreds of millions of dollars earlier this year and recently partnering with ESPN after the sports media giant launched Tom Brady collectibles.
Therefore, it’s not much of a surprise that the first high-profile NFT collection the American football GOAT would join is the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). Yuga Labs, the team behind BAYC, has been busy as well this spring, dropping ApeCoin to the delight of Bored Ape holders and promoting their upcoming metaverse launch (called Otherside).
Currently, BAYC is widely considered the top profile picture NFT project in the NFT world, surpassing the once premier CryptoPunks collection. And Brady will go down as perhaps the best player to ever play professional football.
There’s no telling if Brady’s entry into the Yacht Club will signal a future partnership between BAYC and Brady’s crypto interests or if it will just be another high-profile celebrity entering the Club.
